Peekaboo slot canyon near Kanab

Kristen, Landon and Brent went to a slot canyon today located near Kanab. Actually, our first attempt was in the truck with everyone. But we got stuck in deep sand. So we went back with the Rino. Anyway you can drive right to the mouth of this canyon, and it is amazing. Notice the log wedged about 30 feet above Kristen and Landon. Wouldn't want to be there during a flash flood.


There are three sections, nothing tight to walk through but plenty of places you can touch both walls.

This is an easy 1 hour walk, up and back. Just about anyone could make it. Challenge is getting to the canyon. Takes a pretty good 4 wheel drive short wheel base like a jeep, or a ATV or side-by-side because of the 4-5 miles of deep sand you drive through. Definately worth it. Sorry this shot is fuzzy, I really needed a tripod. It was too dark in the bottom of the canyon here to hold the camera steady for the slow shutter. But you get the idea anyway.

The effects of the light from above and the different colors of the rock are pretty cool. Speaking of cool, it feels like someone turned on the cooler when you walk in some of these deep canyons.

Landon gets a prize to take home: rattlesnake rattles

Mom was the one to spot the first rattlesnake of the year! Dad ran outside and took care of business, then we decided that we should get a picture of Landon holding it. The only trouble was, it was still moving and twisting its gross slithery body. Apparently they can do this for hours after dying. So Dad held it for the picture, but Landon is pleased as could be to carry around his first (and hopefully only) rattle.
Let it be known, there are rattlesnakes in Kanab. But it turns out they provide quite a bit of entertainment.

Lincoln City, Oregon, June

Kathy and I traveled with Kevin, Kalie, and Isaac to Lincoln City Oregon where we met up with Scott, Brittany, Melanie, Lucas and Dustin, Kristen, Landon, and Lydia. We had a 4 bedroom house rented close to the beach. The weather mostly cooperated, as you can see from the photos.

The first afternoon on the beach as as you can see, the weather is perfect.

The first morning we had our traditional breakfast at Wildflowers. Until we discovered Wildflowers a few years ago I though all breakfasts were pretty much equal. Not so!!!! Their hot chocolate is like liquid candy bars topped with thick whipped cream, that is almost like ice cream. The debate continues as to whether the seafood omlette or the french toast if best. Have to try it again next year to make the final determination.

At low tide one morning we headed to a rocky point with the promise of tide pools. We weren't dissapointed.

Kristen demonstrated her bravery when it comes to holding a hermit crab that is trying to get back to the water.

And of course, another great meal. This is one of our traditional lunch places, Mo's. Again, the debate is over the bread bowl with clam chowder, or the crab melt.

Bentley summer vacation

Panguitch Lake was the destination of our little vacation this year. The highlights of the weekend included "Rusty", our circa-1977 pontoon boat fully equipped with swivel seats and dual anchors. Unfortunately, Rusty must have been emitting a rancid odor that day which the fish despised due to the fact that we came home fishless. Oh well. As you can see, we had a blast regardless. The weather was perfect, wind was calm, and the company was unbeatable.

Besides fishing on the lake, our weekend was full of adventurous rock-collecting hikes, a very homey cabin, phenomenal food, and plenty of rock throwing into roaring rivers.

On our way home, we stopped by Bryce Canyon to check out the beautiful sights. We had never visited there before, and were blown away by the breathtaking views it offered. We finished off our vacation with a nice dinner in Kanab at the Chamberlain Inn. All around, a fantastic vacation, one we will for sure duplicate in the future.
